This script is just a wrapper for httpd.
See the libtool documentation for more information.
bin/./apachectl start: httpd could not be started     

Then if a bung a link in to satisfy .libs
%bin/./apachectl start

This sounds like you had a pretty messed up apachectl
script.  Can you try again with the most recent release
of Apache 2.0 which should be much improved.
